At BixHRWisdom, the focus has always been simple: to make workplace issues easier to understand and easier to manage.
No heavy theory, just practical insight drawn from what actually happens in organizations every day.
Now, let’s talk about discipline.
Most people hear that word and immediately think punishment.
But in reality, discipline should be about guidance, not just consequences.
Here’s what often plays out in the workplace:
There’s a policy somewhere… but not everyone follows it the same way.
i. One manager overlooks issues.
ii. Another reacts strongly and jumps steps.
iii. Another handles similar situations differently depending on the person involved.
And before long, the real issue is no longer the worker’s behaviour, it’s inconsistency.
But here’s what many overlook:
Under Ghana’s Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), Section 8(a) and (b), the employer has the right to discipline workers and also to formulate policies to regulate the workplace.
That’s a powerful responsibility.
It means discipline is not just a management style; it is a legal right.
But it also means it must be exercised fairly, consistently, and within a clear framework.
i. For workers, inconsistency feels like unfair treatment.
ii. For employers, it creates exposure to disputes and weakens authority.
iii. For HR, it becomes a cycle of fixing avoidable problems.
The truth is simple:
A disciplinary process only works when it is clear, well-communicated, and applied the same way by every manager, at every level.
Because discipline should never depend on whom you report to.
One practical shift:
Don’t just have a policy;
i. Ensure your managers understand it,
ii. are trained on it, and
iii. apply it consistently in line with the law.
When that happens, discipline becomes what it should be, a tool for improvement, not just correction.
As you close the week, here’s something to reflect on:
Is your organization exercising its right to discipline fairly and consistently, or leaving it to individual managers?
I’d really like to hear your experience.
How is discipline handled in your workplace?
